For the past 27 years, we have been putting sustained efforts to discharge role of museum such as preserving and developing traditional culture based on our root. But it has not been enough to be a symbol of identity of busan and citizen's pride due to old and limited facilities. In 2002, we rebuilt and renovated busan museum by expanding and modernizing it so that it can satisfy citizen's desire to traditional culture based on collections that are secured by excavation, purchasing, donation. etc.

The dongsam-dong shell midden was designated as historic sites 266 after its importance was recognized as a representative relic and a cornerstone of research on the neolithic age in korea. It culture of the neolithic age is estimated to have appeared in korea approximately 10,000~12,000 years ago, marked by the ability of making pottery. The dongsam-dong shell midden is a relic that has formed over 4,000 years from 7,500 to 3,500 years ago. The relics excavated from the dongsam-dong shell midden not only reflect clearly the transitonal process of the neolithic culture in the south coastal area, but also provide knowledge of various aspects of life. Discoveries have included house sites, tombs and cooking stove sites. Also a jar burial was found which is estimated to date back to 7,000 years ago. This is the oldest jar burial to be found to date. At house site, burbed foxtail millet and millet dating from approximately 5,300 years ago were found. This arrested attention as it provided evidence of small-scaled cultivation of grain. The dongsam-dong excavations are a variety of comb-pattern potteries, stone implements, bone tools, personal ornaments and ceremonial tools in large quatites. The resence of Jomon pottery and obsidian stone revealed the trace of direct interchange with the neolithic people in kyushu in japan.

In Exhibition Hall 1, you can meet the history and culture of the Three-Han Period, which is the origin of the Three-kingdom Period, understand how the region of Busan was after the kingdom of Gaya fell and see the size and interior images of bokcheon Ancient Tombs. The region of Busan belonged to one of the 12 Byeonhan nations in the Three-Han Period, enjoyed the brilliant Gaya culture in the Three-Kingdom Period and, since the mid 5th century, became a territory of Shilla. These changes are suggested by Nopo, Bokcheon and Yeonsan Ancient Tombs all of which were founed in the region.
